On April 11, 2023, the bluish sky turned black, the relatives of late Professor Mohammed Gujbawu were in agony; his friends, colleagues, students and well-wishers were rendered dumb and their brains couldn’t fathom the pathetic and the ugly incident.
The cock refused to crow; the dog hesitated to bark; many people were, dubitably, overpowered by anxiety. Indeed, Professor Gujbawu’s demise was a sad one.
Everyone is an immortal, he may know well that he is going to die, but he will never know when he will die. Naturally, we believe death is inevitable and it usually comes unexpectedly. But what saddens the heart of an individual is for death to be caused by an unexpected illness.
The history of the Department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri cannot be complete without mentioning one of its greatest sons, one of the pioneer students, a man who dedicated his life in serving humanity, a man whose advocacy for justice can be compared to none. He is none other than the vibrant, strong, heroic, warrior, legend, mythical, an epitome of knowledge, an erudite scholar, and a professor of advertising and public relations, the kate Professor Mohammed Gujbawu.
The late Alhaji Mohammed Gujbawu is a great mentor because he took our hands (students) and his colleagues to show us the path through which we can explore knowledge and make significant impact on our lives and the lives of others. Professor Mohammed Gujbawu together with his colleagues deserved the high esteem, regard, recognition and appreciation from not only students of the department of Mass Communication, University of Maiduguri but every member of the university community, because of his immeasurable effort in improving the standard of education in the University of Maiduguri, Borno state.
Moreover, the late Professor Mohammed Gujbawu as a lecturer had assisted the less privileged in the society, his generousity alone has shown his liberality and further proved him as a detribalised person because he welcomed all and sundry. For us that lived in his time had heard and seen his service to humanity and for those that will come after him, his story shall be just like myth. He is a true legend.
I express my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues, students and University of Maiduguri at large. May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him eternal rest. May Allah give us the fortitude to bear this immense loss, amin.j
